The Actress States Mentioning Trump Would ‘Add Fuel to a Fire’ Dividing the Nation Apart
Lawrence has expressed that she believes it's no longer appropriate to comment publicly against the Trump administration, worried it could exacerbate unhelpful debate and further divisions across the nation.
‘I Question the Usefulness’, Notes Jennifer Lawrence
In a recent interview, she shared, “Back in Trump’s initial term, I believed I was running around like a chicken with my head cut off. But experience has shown, over multiple voting cycles, public figures have no real impact whatsoever on who people vote for.”
The actor went on, “So then what am I doing? I’m just sharing my opinion on something that’s going to worsen tensions dividing the country apart.”
Shifting Views
Lawrence has previously been open about backing right and leftwing presidential nominees in past elections. Growing up with Republican parents in her home state, she cast her ballot for the Republican nominee in 2008 then moving to the left-leaning politics and revealing she recognized during President Obama’s term that backing conservatives was opposing her personal freedoms as a female citizen.
Earlier Remarks
Earlier in her career, she remarked that Donald Trump’s election would be “a disaster” and endorsed Joe Biden in the 2020 election. More recently, she gave her endorsement to the Democratic nominee, “since I think she’s a strong contender and I trust that she will take all necessary steps to safeguard abortion access.”
Industry Position
Lawrence was joined by numerous celebrities in her disapproval of the former president as a presidential contender, but the lack of leverage stars have over the public choices was underscored by Trump’s victory.
“Another four years appears changed,” noted she regarding his administration. “Because he said what he was going to do. We knew what he did for the previous administration. He was explicit. And that’s what we chose.”
New Release
Lawrence is discussing Die, My Love, director Lynne Ramsay’s project in which she plays a young mom who deals with her psychological well-being in the countryside. During a press conference for the movie in Venice, Lawrence spoke about Israel’s bombings in Gaza: “I feel fear. It’s devastating. What’s taking place is nothing short of a genocide and it’s awful.”
Broader Concerns
The actress elaborated by stating that she was disheartened by “the disrespect in the discussions of the political landscape at present and how that is going to be normalised to the children right now. It’s going to be typical to them that elected officials deceive.”
She aimed to shift anger about the issue to leaders rather than actors and artists. “Keep attention on the people in charge,” she said, in what many took to be a allusion to the then-recent pledge endorsed by numerous Hollywood professionals to refuse engagement with specific industry bodies.
Personal Connections
Lawrence, who earned critical acclaim at a young age for her performance in the acclaimed film, is receiving praise for her portrayal in her latest project. While Lynne Ramsay has denied the story being seen as one of postpartum depression and psychological distress, Lawrence shared that she identified with parts of her film narrative after the birth of her second son, soon after filming concluded.
“It was fear for my son,” she explained, “imagining every worst-case scenario, and then second-guessing everything that I was doing. I was already in therapy, but I started taking a drug called the prescription and I took it for a short period and it made a difference.”
Professional Experiences
Lawrence also discussed about the liberating necessity of shooting revealing sequences in the project while she was expecting and couldn’t work out.
“It feels nice,” she commented, of being forced to set aside self-consciousness. “I mean, I sometimes think where I’m like, How exactly do I differ between me and a prostitute? But it doesn’t trouble me deeply.”
